DEPARTMENT OF URDU



The Department of Urdu at Zakir Husain Delhi College Evening came into existence with the establishment of the college in 1958. Renowned Urdu academicians, researchers and poets have worked at, evolved, and contributed to the Department of Urdu at Zakir Husain Delhi College Evening. Eminent writers, scholars and teachers like Professor Aslam Parvaiz, Professor Ali Javaid, Dr. Salahuddin and Mr. Azmatullah have nurtured the department of Urdu with their dedicated service to endow it with name, fame and credibility.

The department feels privileged to offer courses of Urdu literature and Culture to students of B.A Hons, B.A. Prog., B.Com Hons and B. Com Prog. Many students of our department of Urdu have proved their excellence at the University level and topped the exams. Every year, a large number of students enrol in their M.A. courses after successfully completing undergraduate studies at our college. Quite a large number of our students then become a part of the M.Phil and Ph.D programs in Urdu offered at the Delhi University, and the other renowned universities of India and become a part of the larger community of scholars engaging in creative and critical work in Urdu language. Most teachers of the department of Urdu at Zakir Husain Delhi College Evening, while fulfilling the teaching-learning requirements of students at the college, are engaged in the supervision and advice of Urdu Ph.D. students at the department of Urdu at the Delhi University.

The Department of Urdu makes yearly editorial contributions to the college Urdu Magazine, “Shama- e-Hayaat”. “Shama-e-Hayaat” is now an eminent literary, critical magazine that publishes the creative and critical essays of young students along with the essays of the teachers of the college and many other scholars across departments and disciplines. Shama e Hayaat has an ISSN no and can be accessed on popular websites like “Rekhta”.

Under the aegis of “Bazm e Adab” the department of Urdu, Zakir Husain Delhi College, Evening, conducts annual programs for the promotion and propagation of Urdu culture, like Mushaira, Qawwali, seminars, competitions of public speaking, quiz, Chahar bait and Dastaan Goi. Bazm e Adab, every year, host some of the most eminent scholars, artists and performers of the country because of which the society and the department are not only very popular at the Delhi University but also amongst the Urdu and other departments of many other universities of the country
